Bounce

Hard bounces (unknown mailbox, invalid domain) are permanent — the address must be suppressed. Soft bounces (mailbox full, greylisted, throttled) may succeed on retry. Sustained hard-bounce rates above ~2% will damage sender reputation everywhere, not just with one provider.
